Indians Fall from Top Spot in Latest WVSSAC Prep Football Ratings; Fairmont Senior Moves to No. 1

By Jeff Toquinto on September 27, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

One week after taking the top spot in the Class AA portion of the WVSSAC prep football power rankings, Bridgeport has fallen from atop its perch. However, it was only a slight tumble as the Indians come in at No. 2 this week.

The fall was probably not unexpected in the power ratings, which uses a computer-based formula to earn points (and bonus points) based on the records of the teams played and the classification of the foes played. Despite Bridgeport, now 5-0, upending previously No. 12 ranked Lincoln in Shinnston Friday, the state’s new No. 1 – Fairmont Senior – hosted Class AAA No. 4 and unbeaten University.

The Indians picked up plenty of points with their win as well as other bonus points, but the win over UHS provided the Bears with more points and enough to move their way to the top of the ‘AA’ standings. The Tribe currently has a rating of 12, while Fairmont is at No. 1 with a rating of 12.75 and a 4-0 record.

For those concerned, they shouldn’t be. Not only do the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the final poll earn the right to host games throughout the postseason, but Bridgeport and Fairmont Senior – if they would stay in the same position – hook up in week 10 of the regular season with plenty on the line. However, that possibility requires plenty of wins by both teams before that comes to fruition.

The top 16 teams at the end of the year make the postseason in all three classifications. James Monroe (4-0), Point Pleasant (5-0) and Mingo Central (4-0) man the three through five spots, respectively.

Bridgeport will look to enhance its position this week against a struggling East Fairmont team. Fairmont Senior will play host to Elkins.

As for the rest of the top 10, future opponent North Marion along is at the No. 7 position. Lewis County, who Bridgeport beat in the opener, is tied with the Huskies.

No other local teams are in the top 16. Future opponent Keyser comes in tied at No. 17, while Lincoln – who BHS beat Friday by a 24-0 score, is ranked No. 19.

In Class A, South Harrison’s win over previously unbeaten Moorefield has paid off. The Hawks are tied as the No. 1 team with East Hardy. Both schools are currently 4-0.
