Indians Inch Closer to Top of WVSSAC Class AA High School Football Rankings

When it comes to the postseason, home field advantage may not mean everything, but it means a lot. From not having to pack up and travel to the benefits of prepping in your own locker room to making sure your fan base doesn’t get stuck in a several hour road tip, in West Virginia High School football it’s a huge asset to securing postseason success.

In the latest WVSSAC power rankings, Bridgeport has worked itself into position to have home field advantage throughout the playoffs if they began today. The Indians, following Friday’s huge 31-6 win over then 5-1 Keyser, have moved up to No. 2 in the poll that was just released.

The teams ranked one and two would have the first three rounds of the postseason – provided they keep winning – on their home field. Right now, that’s Bridgeport and Frankfort. The Falcons, 5-0, are one of two teams that remain unbeaten in Class AA. Ravenswood is the other. RHS is ranked third in the poll – tied with Wayne.

Bridgeport is just behind the Falcons in the power ratings. FHS has a rating of 11.5 while, the Indians are at 11.43 due to the strength of Bridgeport’s schedule.

Westside rounds out the top five in this week’s poll.  Robert C. Byrd is ranked No. 12, while future BHS opponent Fairmont Senior is listed at No. 13. Liberty (Harrison) is just outside the top 16 at the No. 17 spots.

Wheeling Park, the team that has the lone win against Bridgeport, is ranked No. 9 in Class AAA. Lewis County comes in at No. 10 and Buckhannon-Upshur at No. 14 in the latest rankings. B-U is tied with the Indians’ final opponent of the season – Preston – in Class AAA.

In Class A, Clarksburg Notre Dame continues its steady rise after losing its first two games. The 4-2 Fighting Irish are ranked No. 7 – tied with Doddridge County and Moorefield.

The WVSSAC is a computer based power rankings. The rating is based on not only the classification of your opponent, but how well the foes that you have beaten fare against the rest of their schedule.  Click HERE to read the entire WVSSAC ratings system in all three classifications. Bridgeport also fared well in the most recent “human” polls. The MetroNews.com and Charleston Daily Mail Polls, both done by sports journalists in the print and radio media, have the Indians ranked in the number one spot. Click HERE to read a story on those rankings.
