Indians Losing a Football Game More than Big News Locally, it Gets National Coverage Via USA Today

By Jeff Toquinto on November 28, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

How do you know that your football team is having an impressive run? When you lose a game and the fact that you lost isn’t just local news, it makes national news.

Bridgeport’s 38-game unbeaten streak came to an end Friday night in the Class AA semifinals. The Indians lost a heartbreaking 22-21 double overtime contest to Fairmont Senior, which denied them a shot at defending the Class AA state championship and going for a fourth straight title Friday evening at Wheeling Island Stadium.

Not only did statewide media take notice, but the national pundits did too. USA Today’s High School Sports did a segment on the game. That story can be found by clicking HERE.

For those wondering, the last loss came to Wheeling Park in a contest in Ohio County. The Tribe feel to the Patriots by a 14-10 score. Last year, the Indians were looking to avenge the setback, but the game was ruled a tie by the WVSSAC after lightning stopped play in week two of the regular season.

Because the game was ruled a tie, Bridgeport’s steak is considered a unbeaten run as opposed to a winning streak. Although not mentioned in the article, Bridgeport also had a 38-game winning streak against Class AA foes (last loss to Keyser in 2012) and a 53-game streak against opponents from the Big 10 Conference snapped.

The Indians, who once again lose several talented players, will look to start new streaks next year. Many key players are back in the fold for the 2017 season.
