Indians Maintain Top Spot in MetroNews Football Poll; Friday Foe Wheeling Park No. 3 in Class AAA

By Jeff Toquinto on August 31, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

While there were plenty of teams that moved up in the rankings and plenty more that moved down, Bridgeport’s position in the weekly MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings came in at status quo.

Following the Indians’ 50-13 triumph against homestanding Buckhannon-Upshur Thursday evening at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium, the 30 individuals that vote in the power rankings didn’t change their mind. For the second straight poll, the Indians not only were ranked No. 1 in the Class AA portion of the rankings, but received all 30 of the votes.

Next week, however, the Indians will further prove themselves worthy of the ranking or could potentially fall. Bridgeport will go up against Wheeling Park at Wayne Jamison Field. The Patriots are the only team to beat the Tribe the last two years on the Indians’ way to a state championship.

This year’s matchup again figures to be a challenge. Although the Patriots had an open week to start the season, they come into the game ranked No. 3 in the Class AAA power ratings – actually up one spot from the preseason ranking.

The Patriots aren’t the only future team the Indians play that is ranked in this week’s poll. Fairmont Senior, coming off of a 24-13 win over Robert C. Byrd, jumped one sport to No. 4. Keyser, who dismantled Petersburg by a 61-13 count, jumped up to No. 5. The Eagles fell just one spot to No. 8.

Morgantown managed to stay at No. 8 in Class AAA after its 54-30 win against Anacostia out of Washington, D.C. No other local teams are ranked in the top 10 in any of the three classifications.

The power ratings are based on the votes of radio broadcasters and journalists from across West Virginia. The MetroNews poll is not used to determine playoff pairings. The WVSSAC’s power ratings, which come out of the third week of the season, determine the pairings.
