Another preseason high school football poll is out and Bridgeport – along with several of their opponents – is ranked high in their respective class. A week after the Charleston Daily Mail’s preseason poll had the Indians ranked No. 2 in Class AA, the MetroNews.com power poll came out this past weekend.

Once again, the Indians find themselves ranked in the number two spot. And once again, the Indians find themselves behind Wayne; the team Bridgeport beat 14-13 in last year’s Class AA state championship game.

Wayne finished with 239 points and 16 first place votes. The Indians finished with nine first place votes. Rounding out the top five was Bluefield, Robert C. Byrd and Sissonville, respectively.

The Indians and Eagles will renew their rivalry once again in week four.  Also ranked in the MetroNews Class AA poll that are part of the Bridgeport schedule is Keyser at No. 6 and Fairmont Senior in the ninth spot. Wheeling Park, which is the second week opponent, is ranked No. 6 in Class AAA. Lewis County, also in Class AAA, would be ranked No. 13 as the Minutemen are in the receiving votes category.

BHS Coach Josh Nicewarner has said recently he doesn’t put much stock into the rankings. Although he said he knows players, fans and even coaches know they’re out there, he said if you get caught up in them then you can be victimized by them.

The voting is done by a panel of 25 sports writers and radio broadcasters from across West Virginia. The poll has no bearing on postseason standings.
