Indians Remain No. 1 in Class AA Portion of Latest MetroNews Basketball Rankings; Fall to No. 8 Overall

Prior to last night’s game with East Fairmont, Bridgeport’s boys’ basketball team finally was able to get in a few ball games. And both of those outings saw the Indians come out on top to move to 9-0 on the year.

Thanks in part to the Tribe’s unbeaten record as well as playing a strong slate of games, the Indians remain the top-ranked Class AA team in West Virginia. BHS was once again No. 1 in the latest edition of the MetroNews Power Index basketball rankings.

While BHS did remain status quo in the ‘AA’ standings, it dropped in the overall rankings. After being listed No. 5 overall for the last two weeks, Bridgeport fell to No. 8 this week.

If Bridgeport keeps winning, the overall ranking could certainly change. Several of the Indians’ upcoming opponents are ranked high in the Class AA standings, while at least one Class AAA foe is near the top of the roost.

Future foe Robert C. Byrd, at 10-2, is No. 2 in Class AA and No. 14 overall. BHS will play a rematch against the Eagles in Clarksburg.

Fairmont Senior (11-2) is No. 3 in Class AA and comes in at No. 15 overall. The Tribe and the Polar Bears still have two regular season battles, including a matchup this Friday at BHS.

Rounding out the top five is Frankfort (13-2) at No. 16 overall in the fourth spot and defending state champion Poca at No. 5. The Dots are ranked No. 18 overall and have a 12-2 record.

Huntington, who Bridgeport is set to face this month in Charleston, is ranked No. 2 overall and in Class AAA. The Highlanders are 13-0. Musselman, who saw a game with the Tribe scratched due to weather, is No. 6 in ‘AAA’ and overall with an 11-2 mark. There is no word on whether the game will be made up.

The No. 1 team in Class A remains Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish, ranked No. 19 overall, stand at 10-1 on the year. Bridgeport also had a game with the Irish scheduled, but it was also scratched due to weather. There has not been a makeup game announced.

Unlike the Associated Press poll, the MetroNews poll is a computer-based poll that counts wins and strength of schedule in determining where teams are ranked.
