Indians Status in MetroNews Prep Football Power Rankings Remains Same; Still No. 1 after RCB Win

While the computers see things one way with Bridgeport High School football, the humans involved with determining just how good the Indians are see things another. For the fifth straight week, the Tribe finds itself atop the West Virginia MetroNews Prep Football Power Rankings.

BHS is ranked No. 1 with 23 of the 25 first place votes going its way as the rankings remained status quo from last week after the Indians 41-7 win against Robert C. Byrd. The voting in the MetroNews poll is done by a panel of radio broadcasters and sports writers from across the state.

Last week, the 4-0 Indians were ranked No. 2 in the first WVSSAC power rankings. The SSAC poll, which determines the top 16 teams and where they’re ranked for the postseason, is done by a computer-based formula.

In this week’s MetroNews poll, Fairmont Senior is once again ranked No. 2. The 3-0 Polar Bears went on the road and hammered Buckhannon-Upshur 43-7. Point Pleasant, 4-0, remained No. 3 and had one first place vote after its 41-12 victory against Logan, while Mingo Central stayed at No. 4 after a bye week. The Miners have the other first place vote.

Rounding out the top five is James Monroe. JMHS is 3-0 after a 52-6 win against PikeView Friday and the club was also the No. 1 team in the first SSAC Class AA poll.

Along with Fairmont Senior, one other future foe is ranked in the top 10. Keyser, coming off of a 28-14 road win against Weir, is 3-1 and visits Allegany (MD) this week. Lewis County, a team Bridgeport beat in the opening game of the year, is just outside the top 10 at the No. 11 spot. Friday’s foe, the 3-1 Lincoln Cougars, are also receiving votes. LHS is tied for No. 15 based on the votes received.

While many teams don’t suffer from off weeks, in Class A South Harrison took a small tumble. The 3-0 Hawks went from No. 6 to No. 7. SHHS has a showdown this week as it visits No. 4 and 4-0 Moorefield.
