Indians Suffer Minor Slide in MetroNews Football Poll Following Initial Loss of Season Last Week to FSHS

By Jeff Toquinto on September 17, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

After suffering its first loss of the prep football season this past Thursday, Bridgeport took a tumble in the MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings. The Indians fell to 3-1 after a 45-14 setback to Class AA top-ranked Fairmont Senior.

With the loss, the Indians fell from the No. 3 positions they’ve held since the beginning of the 2018 season. The Tribe moved to No. 5 in the poll of 21 radio broadcasters and sportswriters across West Virginia.

Fairmont Senior maintained the top spot, but the Polar Bears are still not a unanimous choice. The defending ‘AA’ state champions, Bluefield at 3-0, are at No. 2 and have six first place votes. The Beavers hammered Greenbrier East 62-7.

The new No. 3 in the standings this week is 4-0 Point Pleasant. One spot ahead of Bridgeport is Mingo Central, fresh off a 39-36 win against Sissonville. The Miners are also 3-1.

Bridgeport will face a second straight top 10 opponent this week. The Indians will host Robert C. Byrd, a 69-14 winner over ‘AAA’ Preston, on Friday in their homecoming contest at Wayne Jamison Field. RCB, 3-1, comes in at No. 7 in this week’s poll.

Another future opponent is also in the top 10. Keyser, who pulled off an amazing comeback in a 41-40 win at Weir, is 2-1 and ranked No. 8.

In Class A, despite having a bye week Doddridge County dropped in the standings. The Bulldogs, 3-0, are now No. 3 and trail No. 1 Wheeling Central and No. 2 Williamstown.
