Indians' Win against Talented Keyser Squad Doesn't Move Needle Up or Down in MetroNews Power Poll

By Jeff Toquinto on October 24, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

After needing to rally for the first this season from a fourth quarter deficit against one of the top Class AA teams in the state Friday, Bridgeport managed to maintain its position – and number of votes – in the MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings.

The Indians remained number one and kept 23 of the 25 first place votes. The votes come from 25 statewide radio broadcasters and sports writers.

BHS had arguably the most impressive win of the week of the top teams. The Indians went to Mineral County and rallied from a 13-3 deficit to beat Keyser by a 24-13 score. The Golden Tornado, 5-3, had not lost to a West Virginia team this year.

While the Tribe stood pat, so too did the rest of the top five. It’s likely that won’t be the case after this Friday’s games.

Bridgeport will end a run of three-straight games against top 10 foes Friday with a road trip to East-West Stadium. The Indians will face 7-1 Fairmont Senior. The Polar Bears, ranked No. 4, had a bye week and will close the season hosting BHS and close the year against East Fairmont.

Point Pleasant remains No. 2. PPHS maintained the final two first place votes after beating Man by a 41-0 score.

The only other unbeaten in Class AA, Mingo Central, stays at No. 3. The 8-0 Miners upended Scott by a 48-20 score.

Sissonville stayed at No. 5 despite its game with Poca being postponed. That contest will be played today at Poca and SHS hopes to go to 7-1 after the game.

Keyser’s loss caused a drop, but statewide voters still believe they are one of the state’s top teams. The Golden Tornado fell two spots to No. 9. No other schools locally or on Bridgeport’s schedule is listed in the top 10, but Lincoln is in the “also receiving votes” portion of the standings.

In Class A, South Harrison took a big drop in the polls as its home game against No. 1 St. Marys did not go as the Hawks planned. After going up 6-0, SMHS rolled to a 47-6 win to stay at No. 1. The No. 3 South Harrison squad fell five spots to No. 8.
