Notre Dame Sophomore Jarrod West Receives D-I Offer to Play Basketball for Marshall University

Just a sophomore, Notre Dame High School guard Jarrod West was involved in a pretty good phone conversation today shortly after his father got what he called “one of the best phone calls I’ve had in my life.”

The younger Jarrod West, the son of Notre Dame High School Coach Jarrod West, was offered a Division I scholarship to play for Marshall University Thursday afternoon. The father said he took a phone call on behalf of his son from Coach Dan D’Antoni and learned about the offer, which comes on the heels of the younger West having a banner showing at Myrtle Beach’s “Big Shots” basketball tournament.

“He earned most valuable player honors earlier this month at the tournament,” his father and coach said of his son, who lives in Bridgeport’s public school feeder district.

The senior West is no stranger to the process of being recruited as a player as well as now in the coaching role. He was recruited to West Virginia University and played for the Mountaineers, but nothing topped Thursday.

“As a coach, there’s nothing better than to know that you have a coach that wants one of your players,” said the Irish coach. “Honestly, when it’s your own kid you have that same feeling to the tenth power because I know what his dreams are and I’ve been with him as he’s invested in this dream. It’s just a great thing.”

West led Notre Dame back to the state tournament this season. He still has two more high school seasons to play before making a decision on where he’ll attend college. His father said he did not make a commitment Thursday. He also said, as of now, East Carolina has shown interest in his son.
