Rematch of Last Year's Class AA Title Game Between BHS-Wayne Set for Saturday Afternoon in Semifinals

By Jeff Toquinto on November 23, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

If you enjoyed the Saturday afternoon contest between Bridgeport and Robert C. Byrd partially due to its starting time, then we’ve got some good news for you. If you are a proponent of the Friday evening football game, then this won’t please you.

The Indians’ Class AA semifinal state football playoff game with Wayne will take place once again on Saturday. This morning at the WVSSAC offices in Parkersburg, Wayne chose the 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon time slot for the contest, according to BHS Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Matt DeMotto.

As the visiting team, the Pioneers have their choice of when the game will be played. BHS, as the host team, chooses the field location, which is Wayne Jamison Field.

Regardless of the time, day and location, the contest figures to be a titanic one. The game will be a rematch of last year’s Class AA epic title contest that was won 14-13 on a snow-covered Wheeling Island Stadium.

Bridgeport advanced with a 35-14 victory over Robert C. Byrd Saturday. WHS was able to move forward with a 35-17 win against homestanding Mingo Central.

The Indians are now 11-1 as the state’s top-ranked Class AA team. Wayne stands at 10-2 and is ranked No. 5

The winner of Saturday’s game will play the winner of No. 2 Frankfort and No. 6 Westside. The 12-0 Falcons toppled Nicholas County 26-20, while the Renegades upended Ravenswood 42-25. The state title game is Friday evening at Wheeling Island Stadium.
