Season-Opening Win by Indians over Lewis County Proves Enough to Maintain No. 1 Football Ranking

Bridgeport’s season-opening win against Lewis County proved to be enough to maintain its No. 1 ranking after the first week of competition in the MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings. The Indians garnered 19 of the first place votes in this week’s ranking.

What that means is that the Tribe kept the same amount of votes that they had in week one. The No. 2 team in last week’s poll, Point Pleasant, remained there and collected three first place votes with a win against Lincoln County.

Fairmont Senior’s No. 3 standing was also exactly the same with two first place votes. The Polar Bears, the Indians’ final foe of the regular season, went on the road and posted a convincing win against Robert C. Byrd. To maintain their position. The Eagles dropped out of the top 10, but are first in the “receiving votes” portion of the poll.
Another future foe, Keyser, opened up with a huge win against Petersburg. The Golden Tornado jumped up one spot to No. 5 in this week’s poll.

Future foes East Fairmont and North Marion also received votes. Lewis County, who BHS toppled by a 44-20 score, also received votes this week.

Bridgeport’s opponent Friday, Wheeling Park, is now ranked No. 2 in Class AAA. The Patriots rolled past Perry Trad. Academy out of Pennsylvania by a 41-20 score. BHS and Wheeling will both be looking to go to 2-0 this week when the teams meet at 7 p.m. at Wheeling Island Stadium.

In Class A, South Harrison is the only local squad ranked. The Hawks rolled past Doddridge County and maintained their No. 9 position.

The MetroNews high school football power rankings are voted on each week by a panel of radio broadcasters and sports writers across the state.
