Top Five Teams in Class AA, with Bridgeport at Top, Remains Same in Latest MetroNews Football Poll

So how did Bridgeport’s 64-0 victory against East Fairmont Friday impact the latest edition of the MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings? When it comes to the top five teams in the Class AA portion of the poll, the impact was zero.

In fact, not only did Bridgeport remain as the top-ranked team in ‘AA,’ but the top five teams also stayed the same as well. On top of that, the Indians also had 28 of the 30 first place votes, while Bluefield – ranked No. 2 – had the other two first place votes. The first place votes are also identical to last week.

Bluefield maintained the second spot thanks to winning a shootout with Greenbrier East by a 73-56 score. This week, the Beavers will host Richlands (Va.) High School.

Tolsia stayed at No. 3 following a 31-14 win against Tug Valley, while future foe Fairmont Senior stayed unbeaten and in the fourth spot with a 41-23 win against Elkins. And Bridgeport’s opponent in two weeks – Keyser – moved to 5-0 with a 42-0 shellacking of Allegany (Md.). The Golden Tornado will visit Hampshire this week.

Bridgeport will host Class AAA Elkins Friday. The game is the Indians’ homecoming contest.

No other future opponents are in the top 10. However, Robert C. Byrd’s 42-0 win against Grafton moved the Eagles back into the top 10 at No. 9.

In Class A, unbeaten South Harrison finally cracked the top 10 with its 4-0 record. However, voters only have the Hawks at No. 10 despite toppling previously unbeaten and Class AA No. 10 Lincoln by a 12-7 score Friday in Lost Creek.

Bridgeport’s 4-0-1 mark includes a tie with Wheeling Park. The Patriots took one of the biggest drops this past week after losing to Brooke 21-18. WPHS fell from No. 3 to No. 10 in Class AAA.

The MetroNews poll is voted on by sports journalists from across West Virginia. The poll has no bearing on the postseason rankings, which is determined by the WVSSAC power ratings.
