Tribe Baseball Win vs. 'AAA' No. 2 St. Albans Trumps Lone Loss as Team Stays No. 1 in Class AA Poll

By Jeff Toquinto on April 23, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It wasn’t a perfect week for the Bridgeport baseball team, but it turned out to be an impressive one. The Indians managed to go 5-1 in recent action to move to 12-2 on the season.

The one loss, however, didn’t do anything to impact the Tribe’s position in the latest MetroNews Baseball Power Ratings. The Indians are once again the top team in Class AA.

Just like last week, BHS managed to capture eight of the 10 first place votes in a panel of sports writers and broadcasters from across West Virginia.

Bridgeport lost in the championship game of the Ed Carter Memorial Classic to South Charleston. The Indians managed to beat Class AAA No. 2 St. Albans (16-6) in the second round of that tournament on the Dragons’ home field.

The rest of the top three teams also remained the same. Winfield is at the No. 2 spot and stand at 15-2. Wayne comes in at No. 3 with a 13-3 record.

The rest of the top five consists of Frankfort (13-3), who jumped up three spots, to No. 4 and Fairmont Senior. The Polar Bears fell one spot to No. 5 and are currently 10-2.

One other local team made the ‘AA’ standings. East Fairmont remained at No. 9 and have a 12-4 mark. Two other area teams – Elkins and Lincoln – were in the “also receiving votes” portion of the poll.

Although not ranked, Harrison County teams are also getting attention in Class A. North Dame and South Harrison are both in the “also receiving votes” portion of the small school poll.

In Class AAA, Buckhannon-Upshur is tied for the No. 10 spot. B-U stands at 11-1-1 on the season.
