Tribe, Beavers to Meet Friday Afternoon in 'AA' Semis

By Jeff Toquinto on November 18, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport will play on a familiar day in the Class AA semifinals on Thanksgiving weekend. And that day will be Friday, as was confirmed by BHS Principal Matt DeMotto.

However, there is one big difference. The Indians will not make their trip to Bluefield for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

During a phone call today with the WVSSAC offices in Parkersburg, BHS Coach John Cole opted to face the Beavers at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The afternoon contest on Friday is only available the Friday after Thanksgiving and this isn’t the first time the Indians have opted to play in that time slot. The Tribe played at Keyser in the 1:30 p.m. slot in 2012 the day after Thanksgiving.

The No. 3 Indians, 11-1, will look to make a return trip to Wheeling Island with a win at Bluefield after taking a convincing 42-7 win against Robert C. Byrd Friday. However, it won’t come easy.

Bluefield, the No. 2 team in Class AA, comes in with an 11-1 record as well. The Beavers are also coming off of a 35-0 win against No. 7 Keyser Saturday.

This coming Friday’s contest will make the second straight season Bridgeport has faced Bluefield in the semifinals. Things did not go well last year as the Indians fell by a 37-14 score at Mitchell Stadium.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 12 Weir will visit No. 1 Fairmont Senior on Saturday at East-West Stadium. That contest is set for 1:30 p.m.
