Tribe Girls Win 'AA' Track Title as Smith Sets Four State Meet Records; Boys End Event in Third Place

By Jeff Toquinto on May 21, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport's McKenna Smith turned in what could arguably be the most dominant day in West Virginia state track history. Smith not only won all four events that she competed in, but she set state meet records in all four.

In early morning action at Charleston's Laidley Field, Smith proved dominant by winning the 400 meter dash in a time of 55.25 seconds. She wasn't done. Smith then came back to break the record in the 300 meter hurdles. She posted a time of 44.03 seconds.

For good measure, when the Class AA 100 meter dash event came up, Smith was up to the task - again. Not only did she win, but she broke the record with a time of 11.89 seconds. And in her final event, the 200 meter dash, she posted a winning and state record time of 24.37 seconds.

Currently, at 4:40 p.m., there was one event remaining due to lightning that led to a delay By then, Bridgeport has locked up the Class AA girls title with 95.5 points to second place Weir's 44.5 points.

Bridgeport, however, put an exclamation point on its title. Kristen Crowder, Catie Wilson, Julia Muller and Kirstin George won the 4x400 with a time 4 minutes, 12.76 seconds. The time was a new school record.

The boys ended up finishing in third place in the meet, which was won by Kesyer. Bridgeport went into the final event with a one poit lead over Poca and Nicholas County. BHS had 47 points to the Grizzlies' 46.

Poca was not competing in that event, which left it t between the Tribe and Nicholas County in the 4x400. Unfortunately for the Indians, the Grizzlies won the event to cap their runner-up finish with 56 points. BHS held third place with 47.
