Tribe Strengthens Hold on Class AA Top Spot in MetroNews, Daily Mail Polls

By Jeff Toquinto on October 20, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport remained the top-ranked team in the MetroNews.com and Charleston Daily Mail football polls that came out late Sunday evening. And the Indians strengthened their hold on the top spot in the one of the polls.

BHS managed to pick up 15 of the 25 first place votes in the poll. Last week in the MetroNews.com poll, the Tribe had just 12 first place votes. Bridgeport is followed by Wayne at No. 2, Bluefield at No. 3, Frankfort at No. 4 and Ravenswood at No. 5. RHS was ranked No. 4 last week and was also unbeaten until falling to Class AAA unbeaten Point Pleasant 37-20.

The Tribe stayed the same in the Charleston Daily Mail poll. Although down from nine first place votes three weeks ago, the Indians had all eight first place votes for the second straight week as one voter did not turn in a ballot.

In the Daily Mail rankings, Wayne remains at No. 2, while Bluefield is at No. 3. Both the Pioneers and the Beavers are 6-1 on the year. Frankfort, the lone unbeaten team in Class AA, is at No. 4.

Bridgeport moved to 7-1 on the year with a 35-7 hammering of North Marion in the Tribe’s final home game of the year. BHS will have its bye week this coming Friday and then return to the field on Halloween – Friday, Oct. 13 – to face Marion County foe Fairmont Senior at East-West Stadium.

Both polls are voted on by sports journalists. The Daily Mail poll is voted on by sports writers, while the MetroNews.com poll is voted on by writers and radio broadcasters statewide.

Although the polls are looked at by fans, players and others that follow the game, these two polls don’t determine postseason rankings. The WVSSAC power ratings poll, which comes out Tuesday, determines the 16-team playoff field. BHS is expected to move in front of Frankfort in that poll if projections are correct. BHS will jump the Falcons based on strength of schedule.
