Tribe Trio Dominate at University Wrestling Meet with First Place Finishes; Austin Gibson Gets 100th Win

There wasn’t a full team or even close to one for a myriad of reasons Saturday at University High School in the Superior Photo Scholarship Wrestling Tournament for Bridgeport High School. That still didn’t stop the Indians from doing well.

The Tribe finished eighth out of 12 teams, but still managed to win three weight classes and place fourth in another. Because of that, Coach Chris Courtney wasn’t upset.

“We continue to get better as a whole. Younger guys are catching on quick. We are starting to see moves and finishes that we work on in practice,” said Courtney.

Two BHS seniors came through as they have in the early part of the season for wins in Kavaughn Summers and Austin Gibson. Summers won the 220-pound classification and Gibson was the winner at 160.

Summers not only won, but he dominated. He won four straight matches, including a win against Zach Spencer of Herbert Hoover in the finals.

For Gibson, he captured the first place match in strong fashion after three straight impressive wins in the early rounds. He toppled Ethan Walmer of Northern Lebanon (Pa.) by a major decision 15-4.

Gibson managed to pick up his 100th victory, which was something that Coach Courtney was pleased to learn about.

“I did not know it was his 100th victory. I guess we look at how they are performing more than their record,” said Courtney. “Good for him none the less.”

Younger brother Aidan Gibson held up his end of the family affair as well. He took a pinfall win against Kai Whiteman of Northern Lebanon to win his weight class.

“It was a great finish by all three. This is a very competitive tournament,” said Courtney. “Those guys executed their match plan with the right intensity.”

Bridgeport had another wrestler place in the top four during the tournament. Junior Josh Wojciechowicz finished in fourth place after battling out of the loser’s bracket following a quarterfinal loss. He actually could have finished higher.

“He went 4-1 on the day, but due to a five-match limit (set by the WVSSAC) he was not allowed to wrestle for third place,” said Courtney of the mandatory forfeit that left him at 170.

Bridgeport will now have a lengthy holiday break before returning to action. The Tribe will be in Taylor County Dec. 29 for the Grafton Duals.

“We are going to use the next two weeks to get healthy; too many illnesses,” said Courtney.
