While Much of Jamison Field Complex Spared by Last Week's Flooding, Field House Took Direct Hit

While the track at the Wayne Jamison Complex at Bridgeport High School is in good shape and the artificial surface (although still waiting on official clearance from Field Turf) appears to have been spared by last week’s flood, not everything was left unscathed.

The first floor of the Bridgeport High School Field House took a pretty good shot during the floods that put the entire field under water. In fact, it left damage that workers with Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration were still addressing as of Monday.

“We hope that they finish up (by yesterday),” said BHS Principal Mark DeFazio.

DeFazio spelled out the damage, most of which involved mud and other debris left inside the facility. DeFazio said old paneling in the coach’s offices was ruined, furniture in the same office was ruined, as well as the carpeting that was old turf laid down in the walkway.

“The old carpet, or turf was removed. The real issue we had was that we had water and some dirt and mud in the weight room and on the rubber flooring,” said DeFazio. “We needed that taken out, cleaned and sanitized. We had it all done.”

DeFazio said the dressing rooms, showers and all other areas of the field house have been cleaned and sanitized. He said he feels good about everything being safe for student athletes to use that facility – and others – after the flooding.

“We wanted to be pro-active with everything. I think we’re in good shape as weight lifting can continue, the baseball field was used by Salem (International) and the track was used over the weekend,” said DeFazio.

DeFazio said the main damage was in the coach’s office. However, he doesn’t think getting the walls repaired and furniture replaced will be a daunting task.

“I don’t think that’s going to be too much of an ordeal,” said DeFazio. “As long as we have everything safe for our student-athletes the rest will be easy to handle.”
