Win Over Lewis County, Losses by Others, Propel Tribe in Daily Mail Poll

By Jeff Toquinto on September 15, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

After two games that came down to the wire against Class AAA opponents, Bridgeport finds itself ranked number one in this week’s Class AA Charleston Daily Mail football poll. However, the Indians aren’t alone in the top spot.

The Tribe is tied with Bluefield, both of whom have 94 points. The Beavers, who were off last week, received six first place votes. Bridgeport, who beat Lewis County 14-7, will host rival Robert C. Byrd.

Previously unbeaten and top-ranked Wayne was upended by Point Pleasant 38-14. Another top five squad from last week and future Bridgeport opponent – Keyser – also fell. The Tornado lost 28-20 at Fort Hill, Md. Keyser dropped to number seven.

As for the Eagles, they lost in double overtime 27-21 at Frankfort. RCB is ranked in the sixth spot in the poll.

After Bluefield and Bridgeport, the rest of the top five includes the Pioneers of Wayne at the number three, Frankfort in the number four sport and Mingo Central at number five. Wayne is off this week and then plays Mingo Central on Sept. 26. Frankfort hosts Berkeley Springs and Mingo Central hosts Westside.

Although Fairmont Senior – another future BHS opponent – didn’t crack the top 10, the Polar Bears are on the cusp. FSHS currently has 11 votes, which would have them ranked number 11.

The poll is conducted by a panel of sports writers from across the state. This poll and the MetroNews.com poll have no impact on how teams are ranked for the postseason. The WVSSAC power ratings determine those rankings and come out tomorrow. Bridgeport appears to be set in the No. 7 position in that poll, which will be confirmed Tuesday.
