With Regular Season Set to Close, BHS Baseball Team Looking Strong Heading into Postseason Play

The 2016 baseball season isn’t officially over for Bridgeport High School, but the light at the end of the tunnel is in Kanawha County. It’s there where the Indians will end their season Saturday with road games against Nitro and George Washington.

The games are at NHS. The Tribe faced Nitro at 11 a.m. and then GWHS at 1:15 p.m. Bridgeport will bring a 19-6 record into the game.

“We need to get these games in and get back into a rhythm that we had, particularly offensively, before the weather wiped out most of our games this week,” said Shields. “I hope we can pick up where we left off by attacking the ball and having a strong approach at the plate where we’ve been getting double digit hits lately.”

The Indians did manage to sneak in three games this week. On Monday, Bridgeport beat East Fairmont by a 10-1 score and topped Lincoln by a 12-2 count in six innings.

Against the Bees, Tanner Furbee picked up the win. He went five innings and gave up just one run on one hit with four walks and seven strikeouts.

The Indians pounded out 13 hits to help Furbee coast to the win. Koby Kiefer, Dante Bonamico, Drew Hefner, and Hunter Haddix all had two hits each. Bonamico, Hefner and Haddix all had two hits.

In the game with Lincoln, Gordon Swiger was dominant on the mound. He went all six innings, throwing a two-hitter. Swiger gave up two runs and walked two, while striking out five.

BHS collected 11 hits in this game. Bonamico, Hefner, Haddix and Elijah Drummond all had two hits in the win. Drummond’s total included a home run, while Ross Marra belted a double.

The Indians came back Tuesday and suffered their only loss of the week. Bridgeport fell by a 10-6 score at Morgantown. However, Shields wasn’t totally concerned with the loss.

“Even though we lost to Morgantown, we had the bases loaded three times and hit into double plays. That’s something I know we can fix,” he said.

Bridgeport outhit the Mohigans 11-8. Kiefer had the big day with three hits, while Bonamico and Hefner each had two hits. Bonamico’s total included a double.

“Even with that last loss, I’m pleased with where we’re at. It’s a credit to the kids. They’ve battled through a lot of adversity this year and did so with a lot of expectations on their backs,” said Shields.

Bridgeport will begin sectional play next week. The Tribe will host a first round game Tuesday.
