From the Bench: Decades of Plaques, Awards Need to be Picked Up at BHS or Could Find Way into Trash

By Jeff Toquinto on July 10, 2016 from Sports Blog via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport High School Principal Mark DeFazio’s first day of school was this past Tuesday, July 5. Part of that first day was getting things sorted out and getting an idea of what needs to be accomplished before the first day of school arrives in August.

One other thing arrived this past Tuesday as well – DeFazio’s timeline for graduates and even a few students still in school to pick up various athletic awards. For years, actually for more than a decade now, DeFazio and the BHS facility has been housing dozens, if not more than a hundred honors for nearly 70 student athletes.

Now, it’s time to pick up or it’s possibly going to be tossed away.

“Some of these items go back to 2005,” said DeFazio. “We don’t want to throw anything like this away, but we just can’t keep storing stuff like this forever. We would like to see parents, the kids or basically whoever the items belong to, to come and pick them up.”

The pickup of the items in the office will begin tomorrow – that’s Monday, June 11 for those that may read this blog at a day other than its day of origin. DeFazio said the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for those wanting to get their plaques or other items that are in their name.

“Every year we have more and more that aren’t picked up. When you have the annual BB&T (Harrison County Sports) banquet that starts after school is out we end up bringing a lot of those back in a lot of different sports,” said DeFazio. “I can’t emphasize enough that I don’t want to get rid of these items the wrong way because they belong to the kids. At the same time, we don’t have the space to keep continue saving them.

“There are, I think, 67 kids that have stuff here; some for more than a decade,” he continued. “I saw some of our former students have three or four items and we really want them to have the honors they’ve earned. There’s just too many laying around.”

When you went into the office, it wasn’t as if they were strung all over the place. However, DeFazio had boxes of plaques. He had more stacked on a desk in the reception area to the administrative offices. There were also dozens of medals/ribbons that have yet to be claimed by boys and girls in just about every sport imaginable.

“They’re here and ready for pickup,” he said.

The following alumni or current students have items that need to be picked up. If your name is on the list and you can’t pick them up, have someone in your family pick them up for you.
