City Clerk: First Bridgeport Community Yard Sale Turning Out to be "Bigger Than Anything" Anticipated

By Jeff Toquinto on July 31, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

In her role as Bridgeport City Clerk for the last three years, Andrea Kerr often finds herself inundated with phone calls and messages through other means whenever an issue of interest is being discussed. Nothing, however, has matched the barrage of calls, emails, and visits to her office she’s received in the last three weeks.

“As far as the amount of inquiries that has come through my office, the calls during the last few weeks is by far the most I’ve ever received on anything city related,” said Kerr. “It’s not only people from the city; it is people from outside the city. This is bigger than anything I ever anticipated.”

So what is it that has Bridgeport and others in an inquiry-making frenzy? The situation that has everyone in what could be described as a positive uproar is the City of Bridgeport’s first-ever community yard sale. The uproar has a list of participants nearing the triple digit plateau and that doesn’t include many who likely won’t contact the city.

On August 1, the city will likely see a plethora of individuals from inside the municipal borders and beyond hitting what is now more than 75 homes that have signed up. The city’s event is set to run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., but those selling can start as early and sell as late as they would like.

Kerr announced the first-ever event less than a month ago on Connect-Bridgeport and followed that up with information submitted via press releases. The results have been unlike anything she ever expected.

“I had no idea it would be this big; not even remotely this big as far as the amount of attention it’s drawn,” said Kerr. “People are calling not only to get on the list, but people are calling about how to get a list or a map of the houses involved or just making general inquiries.”

Kerr suggested the idea after getting calls each year once the weather broke from individuals inquiring when Bridgeport was having its annual yard sale. She said she was never overwhelmed with calls, but figured there was enough consistency that maybe it would draw interest – and it’s done that in spades.

“Not in a million years would I have told you three weeks after announcing it that there would be more than 75 homes on the list,” said Kerr. “We hope it will be successful, but you just don’t know. I do know that we’re going to do it next year, plan it earlier and I already have a few ideas that I think will make it bigger and better.”

Right now, individuals can pick up maps of those that contacted the city prior to noon Monday about participating in the first-ever event. The maps can be acquired at the Bridgeport Municipal Complex today from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Benedum Civic Center during regular hours of operation, and the Bridgeport Public Library from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For those that want to print out their own map, they can visit the link below. Along with being able to print a map out showing all those that contacted the city by noon this past Monday, there is a link that includes all addresses – including those that contacted the city after the noon deadline Monday. There is also a link for Google Map. Click HERE for that.

Some individuals have also opted to include information on items included in their yard sales on Connect-Bridgeport. Click HERE to visit the Connect listing of individuals that have submitted. Individuals can still submit to that page.
