Dozens Already Registered for Second Annual City Yard Sale in Bridgeport; Expansion Plans Considered

By Jeff Toquinto on July 06, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

When Bridgeport held its first-ever “City-Wide Yard Sale” last year, it went better than anyone could have imagined with at least 100 households registering for the event and dozens more simply opting to hold sales. And registration and plans by the city and those participating are already in full swing.

“I have more and more people contact me every day. Right now, the calls are sporadic, but the volume is increasing wanting to know details and when they have to register by,” said Kerr. “Right now, I have probably two dozen homes that will be having sales on that day.

The day for the second annual Bridgeport Community Yard Sale will be Saturday, August 6. The hours the city will recognize for the event will go from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kerr has been accepting registrations since mid-May when it was first announced. While no one has to register, registration has its benefits and it’s not so “big brother” can keep tabs on you.

The addresses of those that register will be added to a city wide map. Those maps will eventually be distributed the day of – and several days prior to – the yard sale event. The maps, or flyers that will have additional information on food locations and other city amenities, will be available for pickup at the Benedum Civic Center, outside of the Bridgeport Municipal Complex, at the Bridgeport Public Library and perhaps other areas.

The maps will also be able to be printed from the city’s own Web site. Connect-Bridgeport will also have a link to print the maps once it becomes available.

In order to register, you don’t need to call anyone or fill out any paperwork. All you have to do is send your address to akerr@bridgeportwv.com and it will be added to the map and the list. The registration period will be a lengthy one. Kerr said the cutoff date will be July 22.

While nearly everything has been settled, Kerr said there have been requests by those not living in Bridgeport to have a location where they can set up shop and sell their wares. Kerr said that is being considered, but no decision has been made.

“If we go that route, we’d like to utilize property at the high school as a place to set up and I have a call into the Board of Education to see if that’s possible. If it is possible, we’ll look into doing that at a minimum, but that’s far from a certain thing at this point,” said Kerr.

Kerr also said all efforts will be made to handle the only issue that arose last year, which was individuals parking illegally to get to yard sales. She said there’s only so much that can be done, but efforts will be undertaken to alleviate the situation this year – including extending the hours of the event. Common courtesy would be the easiest way to handle this problem, Kerr said.

Editor's Note: Top photo shows City Clerk Andrea Kerr looking at where some yard sale locations are already planned on the city map that will be handed out, while last year's signs showing drivers where to head are shown.
