Off the Shelf: Looking Forward to Newest Mysteries/Thriller Titles Forecast for August

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on July 26, 2017 from Off the Shelf

The calendar may tell that summer is over on September 22, but in reality, Labor Day weekend marks most everyone’s sense of the season’s end.  And now that school starts in mid-August, the sense that we are in the last few weeks of summer becomes even more real.

Publishers have been pushing their fall announcements for weeks now and I’m beginning to receive winter catalogs.  It is nice to know that Stephen King and J. D. Robb have new books out this fall, but it is all I can do to keep up month to month.  So here are some of the newest mystery/thrillers out in July and forecast for August.  Mark them down and keep your eyes on our new book shelves or on the latest eBooks on the WVDELI.

In July, Dean Koontz and Michael Connelly are introducing new characters in their latest books.  Koontz starts a new series starring FBI Agent Jane Hawk, “a tough-as-hell heroine,” who is determined to prove that her husband did not kill himself.  This pursuit sets her against powerful interests and turns her into a fugitive.  “The Silent Corner” is proving inspirational for bestselling author since he finds the character so fascinating he’s working on the fourth Jane Hawk book, so readers know they are in for a great reading experience.

Michael Connelly continues to write about the Los Angeles crime scene, but in “The Late Show,” he focuses on a new character, Renee Ballard, an up-and-coming detective whose career has hit a snag when she reported her superior for sexual harassment.  Now stuck on the night shift in Hollywood, known as “the late show,” she must turn over all her cases every morning to the day shift, but two homicides just won’t let her go and despite her partner’s protests she continues to investigate during the day until her own personal issues begin to tangle with the cases.  For all the fans of Harry Bosch, here is a new series to immerse themselves.

Other new mystery/thrillers to try out this summer are: “Magpie Murders” by Anthony Horowitz, “Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore” by Matthew Sullivan, “Final Girls” by Riley Sager, “Fierce Kingdom” by Gin Phillips, “Unsub” by Meg Gardiner, “Down a Dark Road” by Linda Castillo, “A Game of Ghosts” by John Connolly, “Love Like Blood” by Mark Billingham, “Paradise Valley” by C. J. Box, “Glass House” by Louise Penny (August 29), and “Y is for Yesterday” by Sue Grafton (August 22).

And also mark your calendars for August 3rd.  The library will be closed all day for staff training.  Just remember, the WVDELI, the library’s downloadable eBook and eaudio service is available 24/7, and now has over 60,000 items.  Just google it and discover the vast amount of downloadable possibilities.
