PHOTOS: Local High School Students Cruise Greek Islands

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on July 17, 2017

Forty students – the majority from Bridgeport High School - recently returned from a trip to Europe, sponsored by the BHS French Department and facilitated through EF Educational Tours.

The group set out Tues., June 29 for a 12-day travel circuit, beginning with four days in Paris, France, followed by a Greek Island cruise via the Celestyal cruise line.

BHS senior Mackenzie Griffith is among students who secured a spot on the trip nearly two years ago. She said the trip included several miles of walking each day and that soaking up other cultures, as well as trying – and learning to appreciate – new foods, was necessity.

Though she was captivated by the sight of Moulin Rouge in Paris and certainly loved shopping on the Avenue des Champs Elysees, Griffith said her favorite part of the trip was the Greek Isle of Mykonos.
“It was just gorgeous – all the whitewashed buildings and blue rooftops – and water,” she said.

The cruise ship also took the travelers – many of whom had never before been out of the country – to Rhodes, Samos, Patmos and Santorini, excursions including a tour of the monastery and Grotto at Patmos, as well as hiking up a volcano and swimming in the hot springs in Santorini. Some early-bird adventurers also took advantage of the opportunity to visit Crete – exploring Greece’s most interesting archaeological sites. The cruise began and ended in Athens, where travelers climbed the Acropolis to view the Parthenon and took in the sights of the city, including the shores of the Aegean Sea, which feeds into the Mediterranean.

See more photos of the Greek Islands of Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonis, Crete and Patmos, as well as the City of Athens, below. Read the entire story, which ran Saturday on Connect-Bridgeport, HERE.
