WVU Extension Master Gardener Program Accepting Applications

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on January 28, 2019

Are you passionate about gardening and want your horticultural skills to be as sharp as your pruning shears? The Harrison County WVU Extension Service Master Gardener program is looking for people like you. The Master Gardener Program is an educational and service program.

When you learn the science behind gardening basics, you will then be able to give back to the community in a variety of ways, including cooperative gardening and beautification projects throughout Harrison County.

Interested gardeners will receive approximately 40 hours of training during a 12-week program.  Topics include botany, plant propagation, entomology, plant disease, soil fertility, vegetable gardening, tree fruits, pruning, communication skills, and others.

After completing the training, the Master Gardener trainees will use their newly acquired knowledge to assist the Harrison County Master Gardeners in addressing horticultural and environmental issues to attain the initial certification and the right to call themselves certified Master Gardeners. The title reflects both the level of attained knowledge and the sense of pride that comes from volunteerism. Forty volunteer hours are required for initial certification and can encompass a wide array of projects.

Classes will be held Tuesday nights from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. This will be in conjunction with the Marion County Master Gardener training class, the first half of classes will be held at the Harrison County Recreation Center and the latter half of classes at the Winfield Community Building in Marion County. There is a program fee of $95 to cover the cost of training and materials.

The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 19th at the Harrison County Recreation Center and include a full explanation of the program and opportunities will be discussed. Contact the WVU Harrison County Extension Office (304) 624-8650 to request an application for the program and more details.
