Going into Saturday’s West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission cheer competition, Bridgeport Coach Emilee Stout said her wish was for her Class AA Region 2 runner-up team to execute a clean routine.
She got that wish.
Tribe supporters report that the performance at Charleston Civic Center – including dance, technical cheer, stunting and tumbling – was flawless. That performance earned the Lady Indians a score of 333.95, finishing within 20 points of Robert C. Byrd. The county rival, which also topped Bridgeport at regionals, captured the state’s Class AA top spot for the third year in a row. Fairmont Senior came in third with a score of 313.55. East Fairmont ended up in sixth place.
At the awards ceremony which followed competition, BHS cheerleaders were obviously thrilled with their finish. So was Stout.
“Our performance was the best I’ve ever seen it,” she said. “We peaked on the biggest stage of the year and I’m so happy for the seniors to go out that way. What a great accomplishment for our team.”
BHS seniors Madelyn Strait, Kayla Haywood and Taylor Bailey are team captains. Other members are Halli Spears, Rachel White, Taylor Smith, Hannah Allen, Anna Wilfong, Kaitlyn Frazier, Hannah McCall, Hallie Hardesty, Maddi Dillon, Maddie Ward and Courtney Halpenny. Natasha Estok is assistant coach.
Although Harrison County sweeped top spots in Class AA, other area schools didn’t fare as well. Vying for the Class A title, South Harrison High School winded up in the seventh spot after battling several injuries and incomplete rehearsals. Clay-Battelle was once again named Class A champions. It was the school’s 11th win.
Lewis County High School earned the fourth spot in Class AAA. Wheeling Park earned the title, outscoring Brooke by a significant margin.
