It's Happening: A Little Juan Pablo, a Little Paso Doble
By Julie Perine on March 16, 2014
- I didn’t see “The Bachelor” finale Monday night. In fact, I believe I’ve caught only one episode of this season’s series featuring the handsome Juan Pablo Galavis of Venezuela, the 32-year-old former pro soccer player who swept 27 bachelorettes off their feet during the Jan. 5 premier of Season 18. How quickly things change. Six weeks later and the guy is being sabotaged by the ladies vying for his love, as well as the media and – well - everyone. I’m willing to stand out and say I don’t think the guy is necessarily the cunning Casanova he’s been made out to be. Ok. He broke the mold. He didn’t profess his undying love and propose to a woman he met a couple months ago. Why are we so surprised? That’s really not how love works. He’s been taking a beating for “dissing” some of the women or leading them on or saying things he shouldn’t have said. Who are we to know? We don’t know what was said immediately before or after the clips. Plus, I doubt anyone can totally speak from his heart when a camera is stuck in his or her face. I hate to see hurt feelings. I do. But anyone who participates in a show like this knows what he or she is in for. Hey, I’ve tuned in plenty of times through the years. But it’s just an odd premise – all the way around. Viewers are somehow happier with a TV-aired fairy tale ending that most times in show history has gone sour after we quit watching. Juan might not have handled everything just right, but in my opinion, he at least made some attempt to being happy in the future – and not stringing along a fiancé who he didn’t love and for whom he had no true feeling. So he leaves dating Nikki and wants to see where the relationship goes – without the pressure; without the cameras; without the rose ceremonies. That seems reasonable to me.
- “Dancing with the Stars” had me from the time I saw Mario Lopez and Karina Smirnoff Cha-cha-cha across the dance floor. I remember watching Season 3 and wondering how in the world even a professional dancer could, in just a matter of weeks, teach A.C. Slater to dance like that. Lopez just missed the Mirror Ball Trophy that season. NFL star Emmitt Smith inched him out for the win – which was even more amazing. Faithfully tuning in season after season, I’ve hung on every dance; getting caught up in the rhythm, the steps, the chemistry; the Salsa, the Quickstep, the Rumba. Some of my personal favorite dancing stars have included French actor Giles Marini, pop artist Donny Osmond, singer Nicole Scherzinger, NFL’s Kurt Warner, “Dirty Dancing’s” Jennifer Grey, “Cheers’” Kirstie Alley – and on and on. I, for one, am pretty pumped for Monday's Season 18 premiere, especially the dancing debut of Olympic ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White and “Full House” child actress Candace Cameron Bure. Let the dancing begin! The season premiers 8 p.m. March 17 on ABC.
