Much of the city became very dark Wednesday evening. when a large tree fell on Johnson Avenue, taking down with it power lines and at least three utility poles. The incident happened just before 10 p.m.
Bridgeport Police/Fire and Monongahela Power crews are on the scene. Traffic is closed from Johnson Elementary School to Willow Lane, as well as the Hall Street/Johnson Avenue intersection.
The tree fell along the walkway in the vicinity of Woodland Drive (entrance to Woodside Heights) and is across Johnson Avenue.
Some power lines in the vicinity might be live. Residents are asked to avoid the area.
Power outages stretched across much of Bridgeport, including the James Street, Stout Street, Worthington Drive, Pennsylvania Avenue area. It was estimated at 11 p.m. that it would take several hours to restore power and that likely, power would temporarily be turned off in other areas of town. Some areas reported restoration of power around 11:30 p.m.
