BHS Track and Field Teams Earn Four Runner-Up Finishes in Charleston; Big 10 Meet Up Next

It’s been a busy week for the Bridgeport High School track and field teams.
During the weekend, the Indians competed in The Tudors Biscuit World Charleston Relays at Laidley Field (the site of the state track and field meet). Last Tuesday, a small group of BHS athletes took part in a meet at Grafton.
This Tuesday, the Indians will be at the Big 10 Conference championship meet at Robert C. Byrd High School. Field events at the Big 10 meet are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and running events slated for a 3 p.m. start.
In Charleston, BHS had a runner-up finish in four events. For the girls, Giana Cox in the closest race in the event regardless of class, finished second in the 200 with a time of 25.87, just behind Woodrow Wilson’s Ama Ackon-Annan who won with a time of 25.86.
Abigale Stewart cleared 5-00 to finish second in the high jump.
For the BHS boys, Cale Culicerto had a second-place time of 41.85 in the 300 hurdles and Troy Zorick was the runner-up in the 3,200 with a time of 9:38.13.
Third-place finishes went the girls shuttles team of Hazel Jackson, Bria Smell, Ava Hollen and Carley Lattea with a time of 1:10.20, Lyza Halterman in the girls shot put at 32-01, Zorick in the boys 1,600 at 4:31.21, Wes Brown in the shot put at 44-02, the 4x800 team of Sam Dodson, Ethan Smell, Quentin Collier and William Northey with a time of 8:37.34 and the 4x100 team of Jon Bender, Donte Pierre, Tanner Hathaway and Alex Moses with a time of 45.30.
The BHS girls had two fourth-place relay teams. Alea Matthis, Mikaela DeMoss, Sara Rexroad and Ashley McBrayer finished at 10:55.39 in the 4x800 and Hollen, Savannah Courtney, Eliza Perine and Lee Ann Gaskins ran a 1:52.79 in the 4x200.
For the BHS boys, Northey was fourth in the 3,200 at 10:04.05, while Dodson was fourth in the 1,600 at 4:32.19. Three relay teams also picked up fourth-place finishes. Culicerto was joined by Gabe Martin, Parker Blount and Cam Martin on the shuttles team that finished with a 1:01.57. Bender, Pierre, Hathaway and Moses ran a 1:33.92 in the 4x200. Moses and Culicerto were joined by Zorick and Collier on the 4x400 team that was fourth at 3:46.50.
Rounding out the fourth-place finishes for the boys was Ryan Jones in the shot put with a throw of 42-10.
Cox was fifth in the 100 with a time of 13.25 as was Halterman in the discus at 93-04 and Isabella McCullough in the in shot put at 29-07.50. Culicerto added a fifth-place finish in the 110 hurdles at 16.00.
Cox came in sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:01.55. The BHS girls also had two sixth-place relay teams. Courtney, Gaskins, Perine and Lattea finished at 52.61 in the 4x100 and Matthis, Abigale Stewart, Gaskins and Cox were fourth in the 4x400 at 4:28.03.
Jones was sixth in the discus at 119-09 and Collier ran a sixth-place time of 2:08.99 in the 800.
Rounding things out for the BHS girls was a seventh-place finish by McBrayer in the mile at 5:54.13, an eighth-place finish by DeMoss in the 3,200 at 12:40.14 and an eighth-place time of 21.74 by Jackson in the 100 hurdles.
For the boys, Ian Blount was seventh in the high jump at 5-08, Bear Metheney was seventh in the discus at 118-07, Dodson was seventh in the 800 at 2:09.11 and Smell was eighth in the 800 at 2:09.16.
In the meet at Grafton, the BHS girls team of Taylor Randolph, Addison Minnex, Ala Moore and Aubrey Shiflet finished fourth in the 4x200 at 2:11.79.
Randolph, Moore and Minnex were joined by Haley Brown on the 4x100 team that ran a fifth-place time of 1:00.32.
Victoria Vash added a sixth-place time of 7:35.29 in the 1,600.
The boys had a runner-up relay team in Grafton as Colton Miller, Donovan Williams, Austin Harbert and Josh Love finished with a 48.53 in the 4x100. The same four runners finished with a time of 1:40.24 for a fourth-place finish in the 4x200.
Harbert was third in the open 100 with a time of 12-16, while Jackson Holtz had a third-place jump of 5-02 in the high jump.
Williams was fifth in the 100 at 12.55 as was Harbert in the 200 at 24.56, Sawyer Culicerto in the 300 hurdles at 48.05 and Beau Ford in the shot put at 37-04.50.
Finishing up things for the BHS boys was the 4x800 team of Aiden Shipley, Holtz, Fox Means and Ian Scroggs who finished with a fifth-place time of 10:34.92.
