11 BHS Players Earn All-State Football Honors; Ford, Brown and Rohrig Selected for First Team

By Chris Johnson on December 09, 2023

A total of 11 Bridgeport High School football players have received recognition on the Class AAA All-State football team announced today by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Three of the honorees are first-team selections in Zach Rohrig at running back, Wes Brown Jr. as an offensive linemen and Beau Ford as a defensive lineman.

Aidan Sparks was chosen as the second-team defensive captain as a defensive lineman. He’s joined on second team by Ryan Jones as an offensive lineman, Josh Love at running back and Cale Culicerto at defensive back.

Honorable mention status goes to end/linebacker Donovan Williams, defensive back Cam Martin as well wing back/linebackers Tanner Hathaway and Tim Jeffress.

“The one thing that all of those guys have in common is how hard they worked,” BHS coach Tyler Phares said. “They all showed up in August wanting to be the best players they could be and they all put in a lot of work to get better this season.

“It’s a great honor for all of them and a great honor for our program.”

Rohrig ran for 1,822 yards on 237 attempts with 25 touchdowns and had 34 tackles, three interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on defense for the Indians, who finished 11-2 and advanced to the Class AAA state semifinals.

Ford,  Brown, Jones and Sparks were forces on both sides of the ball. They served as two of the top blockers that paved the way for the most prolific offense in school history as BHS set school records for rushing yards with 5,420 and rushing touchdowns with 82.

On defense, Ford had 56 tackles, 14 for a loss, six sacks and a forced fumble, while Brown had 39 tackles, 5.5 for a loss, a sack and two blocked kicks.

Sparks had 48 tackles, 13 for a loss, seven sacks and three fumble recoveries.

On defense, Jones had 18 tackles, including two for a loss, a sack, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick.

Love gave the Tribe a second 1,000-yard rusher as he finished with 1,199 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading tackler with 104.

Culicerto intercepted four passes, broke up 14 passes and had 42 tackles with three for a loss.

Martin was the team’s leading tackler with 83, 5.5 for a loss and two fumble recoveries. He also had five rushing touchdowns.

Hathaway had 30 tackles, 5.5 for a loss, and an interception. He also scored nine touchdowns on offense.

Williams posted 74 tackles, 10 for a loss, three sacks and a fumble recovery. On offense, he caught 13 passes for 452 yards and five touchdowns.

Jeffress came on strong at the end of the year for the Indians as he stepped into the starting wing spot after Hathaway suffered an injury. Jeffress had 651 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense he had 29 tackles, three for a loss, and forced a fumble.

Princeton’s Dom Collins was named the first-team captain on offense after catching 83 passes for 1,901 yards and 27 touchdowns in addition to 124 yards on the ground and five TDs as well as a 100-yard kick return of a TD in a playoff victory against Parkersburg.

The second-team defensive captain honors goes to Martinsburg’s Rashad Reid, who had 92.5 total tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Joining Sparks as a second-team captain is George Washington’s Abe Fenwick (on offense) after throwing for 2,010 yards and 25 touchdowns while rushing for 332 yards and seven touchdowns.

Wooden plaques in the shape of West Virginia that include the player's name, school, licensed WVSWA logo and year of the honoree are available to all-state first team, second team and honorable mentions and can be purchased from the Bear Wood Company through wvswa.org or Bearwoodcompany.com.
