Bridgeport Middle Softball Defeats Elkins with Late Surge

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on May 01, 2026

FROM BMS COACH BILLY ESTOK

On Tuesday evening, the Bridgeport Middle School Lady Braves softball team traveled the one-hour school bus ride to Elkins Middle School to play the Lady Hornets.

BMS jumped to an early 3-0 in the top of the first.

With two out, Payton Fisher reached base on an outfield error.

She advanced to third on a single by Audrey Corder. Nora Martin reached on an Elkins infield error and Fisher scored and Corder advanced second.

Corder and Martin scored on a single by Sophia Humble and an outfield error.

The Lady Hornets responded with a four-spot in the bottom half of the first. Three singles, a throwing error, and a batter hit-by-a-pitch contributed to the scoring.

The Lady Braves regained the lead in the second. A leadoff double by starting pitcher Samara Smith started the frame.

Sydney Buffington entered the game as a courtesy runner for Smith.

Two outs later, Fisher singled and an outfield error allowed both Buffington and Fisher to score.

In the third, walks to Martin and Olivia Chapman along with a series of wild pitches and passed balls allowed both to score. BMS had a 7-4 lead.

Elkins scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two out, a single, a walk, and four BMS infield errors gave the Lady Hornets an 8-7 advantage.

In the top of the sixth, Molly Frenzel reached first on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Amelia Green brought Frenzel across the plate on an Elkins infield error.

Fisher followed with a two-run inside-the-park homerun.

Corder followed with a single and an outfield error brought her around to third.

Martin made it to second base on an outfield error and Coder scored.

Humble singled to bring Martin home and that gave BMS a 12-8 lead.

Aubree Owens, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the sixth and remained in the game to play leftfield, started the top of the seventh with a double.

Frenzel followed with her own two-run inside-the-park homerun.

Green tripled and Fisher was hit by a pitch. In an attempt to pick off Green, the throw went into the outfield and both runners scored. With one out, Martin walked and stole second. She came around to score on a single by Humble.

BMS was now up 17-8.

Fisher moved to the circle in relief of Smith in the bottom of the fifth inning. She retired eight of the nine batters she faced via strikeout to secure the 17-8 victory for the Lady Braves.

The Lady Braves were scheduled to play the Robert L. Bland Lady Patriots in Weston on Wednesday evening. That game was canceled due to heavy rain.

The final regular season game for BMS is an away game this coming Saturday.

They will take on Westwood Middle School at noon.
