Bridgeport and State DOH Collaborate to Fill Potholes

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on January 28, 2025

In an effort to get ahead of potholes increasing in size and quantity, the City of Bridgeport Public Works Department is working alongside the West Virginia Division of Highways to patch potholes on City streets. The WVDOH is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of state and U.S. highways within city limits. State maintained roads in Bridgeport include Main Street, Rt. 131/Benedum, Johnson Avenue, Meadowbrook Road, Virginia Avenue, Philadelphia Avenue, Lodgeville Road, and Hinkle Lake Road.

“We have a history of working with DOH,” said Bridgeport City Manager Pat Ford. “We approached the DOH, offering assistance with repairing the potholes in their network, and they were very appreciative and accepted our offer to assist. Our staff drives the streets of Bridgeport daily. We see the potholes, so it makes sense that we partner and help each other out.”

Both entities want to capitalize on the break in the weather conditions. The City will perform the work and WVDOH will provide the material, approximately 13 bags (480 lbs.) of cold patch, to repair the potholes. Cold patching will be used as a temporary fix until asphalt plants open around March 1st. At that time, a more permanent solution will take place in the Spring.

The WVDOH has a large road network to cover, and due to a limited window to make the repairs and the severity of the potholes, the two entities are working together for the benefit of the public. The WVDOH will focus on highways and priority routes, while the City will assist with filling potholes on state streets located inside the city limits.

“The WVDOH would like to extend its most sincere appreciation to the City of Bridgeport for their efforts in assisting us with providing our citizens with a safe road system,” said WVDOH Transportation District Manager, Earl Gaskins. “By joining forces, we were able to address temporary repairs on some of our most critical areas in a more timely and efficient manner. When two Governmental Agencies can work together in a manner such as this, all the citizens will get to witness the positive effects. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the City of Bridgeport and working together to serve our communities.”
