Bridgeport to Battle Nitro for AAA State Championship
By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on November 07, 2025
Bridgeport High School soccer coach Keith Dumas has been there many times. In fact, he was there the last time BHS was in a state soccer semifinal.
The year was 2012 and the opponent was Charleston Catholic. BHS fell in regulation by a 2-1 score and then watched CCHS roll to a state title win by a 5-0 count two days later.
On Thursday, the Indians back in the state tournament for the first time in more than a dozen years, were part of a 2-1 score. This time, however, BHS advanced and will play in the Class AAA state title game for the first time in school history Saturday at the Paul Cline Memorial Complex in Beckley.
The match begins at 12 p.m.
“I’ve been on the wrong side of that score a lot of times, and remember it in 2012,” said Dumas. “It’s nice not only to be on the right side of it, but to be going for a state title.”
The second seeded Indians will face off against No. 1 seed Nitro. The two teams have not met this season.
“They’re similar to us, especially with their style. They have a strong midfielder, Terren Walker, along with two others out front in Bodie Jordan and Kaleb Shaffer, who can cause problems. Honestly, they’re strong across the board,” said Dumas. “I think the key is to contain those three guys, and keep everyone else at bay, to help keep the game in our favor.”
One thing that kept the Indians’ season in the favor of not being eliminated was the defensive showing against the Spartans. It is the same defense that has been dominant throughout the year.
“Our defense is really strong, particularly our back four that includes Tucker Pomeroy, Nate Dodson, Jonah Coakley, and Dom Figueroa,” said Dumas. “Our defense not only played a huge part in getting us here, but they absolutely made the different in keeping Greenbrier’s top players … to just one game and minimum shots on target.”
Offensively, the Indians are led by Riel Figueroa. The junior came through with the game-scoring goal, his 34th of the season, in overtime. Eli Terebus scored the Indians' game-tying goal in the semifinals.
Dumas said the Indians go into the Saturday game healthy. Of course, they do not have leading scorer Grayson Church who tore his ACL in the early part of the postseason.
“Today, we’re going to continue to rest, stretch and rehydrate,” said Dumas. “We have 36 hours to recover and be ready. Everyone knows what’s at stake.”
