City Council Addresses Surplus Vehicle Transaction

FROM THE CITY OF BRIDGEPORT
On October 31, a 2017 pickup truck with 127,000 miles, owned by the City of Bridgeport was purchased by the Belington Volunteer Fire Department for $100. City staff later discovered that unverified and incomplete information had been presented in order to facilitate this transaction.
Upon learning of the situation, Bridgeport City Council acted swiftly and decisively to resolve the matter. The vehicle has been returned to the custody of the Bridgeport Fire Department, and the process to formally reverse the transaction is now underway.
Should the Fire Chief decommission the vehicle, it will be disposed of in accordance with established procedures.
“We are confident that the steps taken will reinforce the integrity of our processes and safeguard public assets,” said Bridgeport Mayor Robert Matheny. “Our priority is ensuring trust, transparency, and efficient management of taxpayer resources.”
Mayor Matheny extends his sincere thanks to the members of the public who brought this matter forward, ensuring it could promptly be addressed and corrected. He will work closely with the City Manager to implement strong, updated policies governing the handling and disposal of surplus assets going forward.
