City Faces in Different Places

By Julie Perine on November 29, 2020 from City Faces

This week's City Face is longtime Simpson Elementary teacher Carole Kinard. Meet her here!

Tell me about your personal history and your history in Bridgeport:
I was born in Latrobe, Pa. I graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1971 and was able to teach for two years in Pennsylania. In 1977, I moved to Clarksburg. I was hired to teach at Simpson Elementary. In 1979, I moved to Bridgeport. From 1977 to retirement in June 2015, I taught at Simpson. I enjoyed my 38 years at the school, where I continue to sub. I have one son, Scott Kinard, who works in the admissions department at Rush University in Chicago.

What is your favorite spot in Bridgeport?
I love going to Hinkle and Deegan Lakes, relaxing by the water or taking pictures throughout the seasons.

What do you like best about our city?
Bridgeport is a great community because of the people. It is close to roads to travel in or o ut of the state. Community involvement makes Bridgeport a progressive, friendly place to live.

What are your favorite Bridgeport memories?
I remember the Fireman's Fair held at the fire department in the summer. There was fun for young and old. It was a chance to eat, visit and play bingo.

What is your favorite spot outside of Bridgeport?
My favorite spot outside of Bridgeport is Charleston. I enjoy visiting the Capitol Flea Market by the airport and Capitol Market for seasonal items such as fruits and vegetables in the summer.

What about your favorite place to visit outside the state?
My favorite place outside of West Virginia is Ocean City, Md. Time spent watching the water and soaking in the sunshine is very relaxing. I also love searching for treaasures for my metal detector.

What are your hobbies?
I love collecting PEZ candy dispensers. I love buying, selling and trading them in addition to attending PEZ conventions in the U.S. '

What are your favorite things?
My favorite food is chicken and cheese quesadillas at El Rey restaurant. My favorite color is blue. Red is my second choice. I enjoy country music in addition to southern gospel. Live concerts are the best.

What is a treasured childhood memory?
Highlights of my childhood include playing at the playground in my neighborhood and riding bikes with no fear of traffic.

What else would you like to add?
I have enjoyed living in Bridgeport for many years. I have cherished memories of hundreds of students and their parents. I have a scrapbook for each of my 38 years of teaching and that is priceless.
