Council to Update Portion of City Code, Approve and Appoint Poll Workers for Municipal Election

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on April 22, 2019

City Council’s second meeting of April will be held this evening. Besides reports by Mayor Andy Lang and City Manager Kim Haws – and any public comments – the meeting will feature a very short agenda.

A second and final reading of an ordinance adopting, enacting and reenacting Article 1711 of the official city code will take place. That article deals with erection, construction, repair or alteration of structures within city limits. That matter, said Council member John Wilson, concerns updates necessary to comply with state building code as authorized by the West Virginia State Fire Commission.

Other line items – both new business items – are to approve the Rotary Club appointment of James D. Gray to the Police Civil Service Commission and to consider and approve the appointment of poll workers for the June 11 municipal election.

Five candidates, including Donnie Tate, Jim Yeater, Don Burton, Adam Starkey and incumbent Jeff Smell are vying for two open City Council seats in the June 11 election. Current City Recorder Hank Murray is unopposed as candidate for city recorder.

Council will also look at addressing a matter on the White Oaks Planned Unit Development from the Bridgeport Planning Commission. That is contingent upon the Planning Commission taking action on the matter at their meeting held today at 4 p.m.

Tonight's meeting will begin at 7 p.m. with a half-hour work session to precede it. As always, members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend City Council meetings, held in City Council chambers of Bridgeport City Hall on West Main Street.
