Excitement Level Growing for BHS Spring Plant Sale

By Chris Johnson on April 12, 2022

When Nicole Byrd took the job as agriculture instructor at Bridgeport High School last August, it didn’t take long for her to be pleasantly surprised.

“I had been told that this community isn’t really agriculture driven but I’ve really seen the opposite with the students,” she said. “I’m seeing that they are excited, they are motivated about agriculture. It’s been refreshing for me coming here because I’ve seen the difference from where I’ve been prior, so it has been really rewarding for me as well.”

That excitement level will likely grow throughout April as the agriculture students gear up for the Bridgeport High School Native Roots Greenhouse Spring Plant Sale.

The early bird plant sale dates are from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 28-29 and from 9 a.m. to noon on April 30.

Sale week will from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., May 2 through May 6 and from 9 a.m. to noon on May 7.

The greenhouse at BHS is student ran.

“The community seems excited but the students are really excited for the plant sale because the way the class is structured, they have had a hand in all of the decisions, making the prices and now they are going to do their salesmanship part of it," Byrd said.

“People have been asking what plants we will have available so this is something the community really wants and the school really wants. I think the title might change from year to year depending on which class is in charge but I think it’s something that will be staying around.”
The sale will include flats or six packs of flowers, potted plants and hanging baskets.

There will also be vegetables available to purchase including a variety of tomatoes, peppers, squash and cucumbers.

“They can take the vegetables home and finish growing them in their garden,” Byrd said. “They are in about four-inch pots now so they are good sized plants. They don’t have to do the whole sewing the seed, transplanting, making sure they are well-developed before putting them outside. We did that part for them.”

More information on what will be available at the sale can be found on the flyer for the event HERE

The greenhouse is located past the BHS softball field behind Bridgeport Middle School.

Editor's Note: Submitted photos of BHS students working in the greenhouse.
