While attending the Elks annual picnic this past week, I learned that Albert Kehrer is celebrating his 90th birthday. He is a 65 year member of at the local Elks Lodge. I also had lunch with Loretta Cooper whose birthday is this week. The Kerhrer and Coopers are long time followers of the Grapevine and I hope they will be able to go online at Connect-Bridgeport or Connect-Clarksburg or subscribe the the Shinnston News to continue reading this column. A very Happy Birthday to both of them as well as Rachel Torcia and all you July babies.
Getting back to the Elks picnic, it was truly a great event held at the Clarksburg Park at the Veterans Hospital. The food was great and I tip my hat to all those volunteers who made it happen. I always enjoy having the opportunity to visit with my many friends and especially this year with Don Niles, Tony Alonso and Karen Phelan.
Another first for me. Preparing fresh beets and enjoying eating them. I had lunch with Alexis Scott and she shared some beets from Francis's garden. She instructed me to cut the green stems off, leaving a little on the top, wash them and cover them with water. Put them to boil for about 25 minutes, take them from the boiling water, peel them, slice them and prepare them in a cup of vinegar, 2 cups of water, some sugar and a few cloves. I put this liquid mixture in the microwave oven till it got very hot, then poured it over the slice beets and let them marinate for several hours. My, my what a wonderful taste fresh beets has. It will be hard to go back to eating them from the can. Alexis also delivered a beautiful set of home made angels to me from Veronica Oliverio Moorman. They were made by her husband Steven.
I was also advised by Alexis that Tom Scott, her brother in law has written a book which in now in print titled "One Shot Scott" and it is available on line or by checking your favorite book store.
I extend my sympathies to the family of Effie Gayle Simons. She passed away this past week and was in her late nineties. I remember her so well as a young girl growing up in East View. She had three daughters and a son and her daughter Kay Simons Morrison was my best friend all through school. It was great to see Kay and to have the opportunity to visit with her and her family. You know it is so strange how different things trigger your memory of friends. Every time I go to the grocery store and pass the soup isle, I think of Kay. Now you ask what possibly could make me think of her in the soup isle? Well, until she moved to Parkersburg we remained good friends and raised our kids together, camped at Audra Park and attended ball games that our sons participated in. Getting back to the soup isle. Every time she made vegetable soup I was in awe. When she cut her potatoes they were the most even squares I have ever seen. I could never try to copy them, no matter how hard I tried. So if you see me in the grocery store staring at a soup can, you know what I am thinking. She is going to have to have some knee surgery and I am still hobbling on my broken foot. We laughed again thinking of the many times she and I entered into the "three legged" races when we were kids. We laughed about now between the two of us we could only muster up three good legs is we tied the two bad ones together. Her brother George and his wife Carolyn still live in East View and are proud to be East View residents.
JoEllen Crowley made a wonderful tiala that she shared with us and her variation was putting ground Italian sausage in it and no tomato sauce. It was very delicious. WE are enjoying our zucchini and hot and sweet peppers as well as Swiss Chard. No tomatoes yet and we are not sure they are going to survive. Dave is still trying to revive them. Our basil is doing great. My brother called me from Florida and went on and on about the pesto sauce his wife Danni, made. If you have extra basil you should try some pesto,it is very simple, will store well in the refrigerator and is a good change to tomato sauce on your pasta.
