October is officially the month of Italian Culture and History in the United States. There are many activities planned throughout the area that you might want to look into to help celebrate this occasion. I would encourage all Italian families to plan an event of your own to observe our heritage. It might be a trip to the library with your child or grandchild to read some good books on Italian history or it might be a trip to the video store to get a copy of Pinocchio, the all time favorite Italian story. You might also plan a meal using traditional Italian recipes. Get the children to help and share your food with your neighbors.
You might adopt the theory of a "Slow Food Dinner". Our society has gotten so use to fast food that we no longer enjoy the long sit down dinners that we use to have, whether it was at our own home or at our grandmother's home. This gave us the opportunity to talk with our family and to enjoy the food that had been prepared and savor its taste. The Slow Food movement is trending in full force and you can find more information on it on line. Not only is it good for our health but it gives us the opportunity to share this great tradition of family dinners with those we love.
As most of you know, this Sunday was my 74th birthday, almost three quarters of a century. Wow, that is old! But the good news is that although we did not gather at home and prepare the meal, David and I did get together with my children, their spouses and my grandchildren to eat a nice dinner at Outback to celebrate the occasion. Everyone was there but my two granddaughters who were detained with other activities. We all ate very slowly and we did engage in great conversation. I am happy to see Steve Leasburg is now the manager again there and the food was delicious.
I offer my condolences to the Scott family on the loss of their sister, Joyce. I also want to extend my condolences to the Dylan Jeffries family. Dylan was the high school football player who passed away on Sunday night. My thoughts and prayers are with Dylan and his parents at this very difficult time.
The City of Clarksburg will observe Halloween Trick or Treat in Uptown Clarksburg on October 30 from five to seven. On October 26, there will be a tail gate party at Jackson Square to watch the WVU/Kansas game on big screen television. For more information on these two event call the Visitors Bureau at 304.622.2157.
Dave and I have been spending many hours cleaning mushrooms, and I might say that although this is not an easy job, it is sure rewarding when we can sit down this winter and enjoy eating them. I was afraid that they might not be as hardy this year but it seems there are plenty if you just know where to look. We have our friends John and Mary Barnett to thank for sharing with us.
This weekend the Queen and Pruitt families will be gathering to celebrate the marriage of Leslie and Dixon. I am so happy my daughter will no longer be alone and we have accepted Dixon into our family as one of us. Congratulations to them and many, many years of good health and happiness.
This past Sunday we were told that our priest, Father Doug Ondeck, will be transferring to Wheeling. We have all learned to love him and he will certainly be missed at the Immaculate Conception Church. We wish him well on his new assignment. By the way, talking about church I hope that you have been watching the progress of the new Parish Center. It will soon be open for use.
Keep in touch, I live to her from you and until next week Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.
