This past week, a trip to Taylor County sure brought back a lot of childhood memories. It has been a long time since I ventured out on a real picnic. This week we were invited to the 67th birthday celebration of John Rowe. The party was held at Valley Falls which is located in Taylor County. We traveled up Route 50 and just after passing the bridge in Grafton we took a left and found our way to this State Park. It is clearly marked and the road is in excellent condition. I have often heard about Valley Falls but have never had the opportunity to visit it. It is a very well maintained state facility with picnic shelters, playgrounds and everything you would expect to find in a park. There is a beautiful stream with a natural falls but you are not allowed to swim there because of the many accidents that have occurred there in the past and a strong undercurrent. The weather was great for an outdoor affair and we had all the old fashion food that use to make a picnic. As I sat there at a picnic table covered with plastic cloth and enjoying hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and all the fixings, I thought of my mother and her famous makings for a Sunday picnic. I thought the only thing missing was her chocolate cake and lo and behold, just as I was about to get some fruit I spotted a chocolate cake, just like mom use to make. Everything was delicious but the memories were great. I recommend you all taking a trip to Valley Falls if you have never been there before. This is another of West Virginias best kept secrets.
L, L AND L. This is all you have to remember if you are a frequent traveler on Lodgeville Road in Bridgeport. For the past year there has been a lot of construction going on in this area. Lodgeville really is an asset to those of us who want a quick way to get to the top of Bridgeport Hill and to alleviate having to travel on I79. Whether exiting or entering Lodgeville Road remember to get in the correct LANE and obey the LIGHTS. Since this construction has been completed I have never had to wait in traffic for more than a couple of minutes. Hats off to the Bridgeport authorities who had the foresight to make these changes. Just remember L, L AND L.
It seems I have been reliving a lot of my childhood lately. I have been so excited to attend the fireworks in the area this past couple of weeks. The firework display put off in conjunction with the Benedum Festival was great. We watched them from the driveway of my brothers house off of Hall Street. Although the rain sort of canceled activities on Friday, Saturday was beautiful and Dave enjoyed the car show. I urge you all to support these events. They take a lot of work on the part of the planning committees and there is always good food. A great way to take a mini vacation here at home. Congratulations to the Benedum Fellows and especially to Les Filewski, my friend from church.
We are afraid we are going to lose all of our tomato plants. They have turned yellow and are drying up on the vines. Dave has tried several different remedies but nothing has helped to date. The rest of the garden looks great and we have already enjoyed a zucchini and some sweet and hot peppers. I have almost been in heaven the past week as I have enjoyed a tomato salad with onions, peppers, a little olive oil and some fresh basil every day. We were able to get some great tomatoes at the Produce House in Clarksburg and my fresh basil is doing great.
Just a reminder that the PWA of Harrison County will be holding a fundraiser event on Saturday, July 27 at 6:30. The proceeds will be used to purchase back packs for Harrison County school children. The PWA has always participated in this program and we encourage you to support this event. A cash prize of $2,500 will be awarded to the lucky number and a movie and dinner for four will be given as a door prize. Cinemark and Chick Filet have made this possible. For more information or to make a donation or purchase a ticket call the PWA at 304 624 6881. Lexie Mayfield is president of the PWA and Lois True Alexander is chair of the event.
We are almost half way through summer vacation and it will not be long till the kids will be going back to school. Have a safe rest of the summer and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine."
