Grapevine: Remembering Miners and Enjoying Holiday Time
By Rosalyn Queen on December 17, 2013 from The Grapevine
This past week was the anniversary of the Monongah Mine explosion. I received a call from Pietro Mazza advising me that a mass was being held in San Giovanni in Fiore for those who lost their lives in the explosion. Many of the Monongah miners come to American from San Giovanni., I hope you remember that the Monongah has erected a statue to memorialize these victims. There were many lives lost in this small town and it affected many families. My grandfather, Giovanni Oliverio, was a victim and he left my grandmother and father, who were still living in Italy at the time of the explosion.
Now to a lighter side of the season. I hope that you have curtailed your activities, such as baking and shopping and decorating. Sometimes we go overboard and then we are too tired to enjoy our efforts. Now is the time to quit and concentrate on your plans for having a happy holiday and enjoying your friends and families. We all have a vision of what we would like for the holidays to be if we could achieve and ideal situation.. Remember we have to be able to let go of things that we just cannot achieve. Not only at this time of the year but throughout the year. I have often said that if we make plans and do not get them done, no one really knows but us, so we enjoy what we have done and move on to the next step. We really cannot think of this as a failure, especially if it encompasses our whole being. Sometimes I think that we try to accomplish others priorities and not our own. We need to realize what is important to us and I think that the most important thing this time of year is being relaxed and looking forward to enjoying the season. Put on the Christmas music, forget about the diet, fix a plate of cookies and a cup of egg nog, call a friend or family member and enjoy the season.
I want to share with you just what I have done so that I may enjoy all my family and friends. I put away all the decorations that I did not get up. Three trees is enough for any person. I have quit baking because I have my favorites and baking is really a big job. I have just enough goodies to enjoy and share with my company. I am done shopping and if I did forget anyone, I have extra cards for gift cards. Now I am just waiting for my friends to stop by so that I can enjoy entertaining them. I encourage you to follow my plan. We entertained my brother Bill who was in from Florida and I so enjoyed my visit with Cheryl Mihaulic.
I know I supplied you with a new recipe for Pita Piatta dough a couple of weeks ago. I must admit that I have not tried it but I used the traditional recipe that is in my cook book. They turned out great and I have shared just about all of them, leaving just a few for Dave and me.
My hope for each of my readers is a happy and healthy Christmas to you and your family.
Stay in touch and until next week "Now You Have Heard It through The Grapevine."
