Grapevine: Sunday Paper Traditions

By Rosalyn Queen on January 21, 2014 from The Grapevine

When the Sunday paper comes to your house, who reads what?

I bet Dad is the first to grab the sport section, little brother gets the funnies, sis take the social section and mom searches for the sales.

There is one thing that continues to drive me crazy, among other things, and that is why do I continue to read the want ads.  What possibly could a 75 year old woman find in the want ads? I turn to the section of the classifieds and start my search.  First I read the medical ads and since I am not a nurse, doctor or therapist, I am sure that I cannot answer any of these. Then I proceed to the professional.  I cannot be a teacher or an engineer, social worker or CPA,  no degree.  But I do find an ad for a radio news operator, a teller  or a local college is seeking program assistant.  I think that  my experience will allow me to apply for any of these positions.  Then I start the search through general help. I find at least ten ads for jobs at local  restaurants.  Jobs for dishwashers, waiters, hostesses and cooks.  My resume could list a lot of experience in theses areas.  Then I find listings for truck drivers, school bus drivers and car salesmen, well I am going to move on from here. I stop momentarily on the ad for homemaker aid, knowing full  well from experience how much they are needed, but I have always know that I was  not made to be in the health care industry. That leaves about three ads that I am really interested in, a conference center manager, assistant in land search business and college admissions assistant.

I try to mentally list my experience and I come up with experience in the radio business, counting and depositing all the money for Parsons Souders on a daily basis, and all the experience I have had getting kids through college, with funding etc.  I also dwell on my experience with the tourism industry and my experience working in the oil and gas department in the Assessor's office.  By now it is almost noon and I must get started preparing Sunday dinner.  I fold the paper up neatly and convince myself that I could probably find a job, but then I really just want to stay home.  I truly think that this is what I was striving for all my working life.  Well I neatly fold the classified section up and put it away getting ready to start my real job, a plain old retired housewife fixing dinner for my husband and kids and enjoying every minute of it.  By the way the pay is great.  I bet for some odd reason that next week I will start the search all over again.

I have been made aware of another planned trip to Italy and will share the info with you in case you might be interested in going there in October.  Father Casey Mahone from the Immaculate Conception Church will be making a pilgrimage to Italy visiting Florence, San Gimignano, Capri, Poistano, Minori, Rome Sorrento Siena, Asssisi, and Pompei.  If you are interested, please call 304 481 3222 for more information.

My sympathy to Joe Trupo and his family on the passing of Sarah.  I have many fond memories of Sarah, especially on the campaign trail.

I have missed many of your birthdays the past couple of weeks but please be sure that you have been in my thoughts and especially to Tonya Zedic and to my sister, Joan and my brother Bill.  Many more in good health.

A little reminder that Valentines Day will soon be here and now is the time to plan a little something special for that someone special in your life.  I hope  that all of you who made resolution to lose weight are still holding up.  So if your special someone is trying, take them out to dinner and bypass all the candy and sweets.   I found a pedometer in my collection of junk and decided that I would try to start a walking program.  I read in one of my magazines that a minimum of 6,000 steps should be taken every day and you should strive for 10,000.  Well, I guess I must admit that the first day I only took 2,000  steps and most of them were from the couch to the kitchen, the second day I took 4,000 and then the third day I took 6,000 because Dave and I went to the mall.  I am not going to give up yet.

Take care and be sure to look after any neighbors that may be home bound due to the weather.  Keep in touch with me and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine."
