THEY ARE HERE! The mushrooms are here. This not hearsay because I have just finished cooking some and we spent the morning cleaning them. My friend, John Barnette, found some in his secret places and he shared one with me. We are still not sure if this is going to be a good year or a sparce year. We will just have to wait. I was thinking that this is ideal weather for them, but they were so plentiful last year that this might be the year when they will not be so plentiful. If you have some locations, go check them out as soon as possible. You know the window to get them is not very big as they will become water logged or dry out very quickly. After cleaning them and par boiling them I have about a half gallon and I am not sure just what I am going to do with them. It is not enough to start in the crock, but I may can two or three pints for this winter.
The recipes for canning the mushrooms or putting them down in the crock are in my cookbook "Arrivederci", which is available at James & Law or at Tomaro's Bakery. Speaking of James & Law, I encourage you to make a trip to Uptown Clarksburg to see their beautiful window. I so enjoy seeing them. I also have some here at home and if you want to call me I will make arrangements to get them to you. My number is 304 842 2662.

A happy birthday to all those September babies, especially Dan Fisher. We made a little vacation trip to Ohio this past week to celebrate Dave's good friends, Vic and Doris Rausers fiftieth anniversary. We had a very enjoyable visit, but most of all as we headed north we noticed the leaves were starting to turn. Plan your leaf viewing trip soon. You know they will be here today and gone tomorrow.
Bear with this old grammy while she brags a little. I really have five wonderful grandchildren and Dave has three. We are so proud of all of them and love them dearly. It just seems that Ben Queen's path leads him on a more visible trip. This past week the New York Times had a section that included two of Bens photo's. It was titled "My Home Town" and the pictures they used were two submitted by Ben. One was a shot of a father and son (Jeff and Brett Hathaway) embracing at the end of the game. The other was a scene from the funeral of Derek Hotsinpiller, one of our fallen local law officers. Even though he is enrolled in College at WVU he continues to take pictures. Ben's work is featured almost daily on Connect-Bridgeport's website and what a source that website is for local happenings. Ben also works with his dad starting up Connect-Clarksburg. He is taking a lot of photos of the WVU football that can be seen on Connect-Bridgeport and WV MetroNews.
We are proud to announce that Sabrina Alonso is attending WVU this year and her sister Samatha is attending Ohio State. Miranda Lang is going to school at Mary Mount. Our other three, Holli, Hunter and Savannah are still in high school. That just leaves our oldest, Marty II who is married to Cathy Oldaker Queen. They are both employed full time.
Rose Ann Cunningham, owner of The Produce House told me that she had purchased a 300+ pound pumpkin for one of her customers. Can you imagine? This is the season for pumpkins and I hope that if you decorate with them that you will use them for your Thanksgiving pies.
If you are interested in travelling to Italy in June of 2014 call Dr.Judy Byer at FSU for more information.
Take care, keep in touch. Until next week, Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.
