It's Happening: Let's Talk Prom

By Julie Perine on April 28, 2024 from It’s Happening

“A Galaxy Far Away” is the theme for the 2024 Bridgeport High School Prom. Fittingly, the event will be held Saturday, May 4, also known as Star Wars Day (“May the fourth be with you.”)

To be held at Bridgeport Conference Center, event décor will combine traditional prom glitz with solar system accents.

As for fashion, styles are as plentiful as the stars in the sky.

“It’s always a mix. Most of what I have seen this year are corset-style tops with boning in the front, as well as a lot of ballgowns; a lot of them with layered skirts,” said Kerri Snell, co-owner of House of Fashions. “It’s all over the place.”

Interestingly, the most requested colors are black and red.

“There are still a lot of people who prefer jewel tones and, of course, neons are always kind of popular when you can find them,” Snell said.
With area proms starting as early as the weekend after Easter, Snell said prom inventory now begins arriving in late-December/January.
“They try to get everything to us before the girls start shopping,” she said.

As for fashion forward footwear, the flats have it.

What used to happen is girls would have their dress hemmed to wear with heels, then at the dance, they would kick the shoes off and be left with a dragging gown. But these days, some girls have the dress altered to hang correctly without heels.

“Most girls go for comfort. Especially if they wear a dress without a slit, you can’t see the shoes anyway so it’s not unusual for them to wear flats or tennis shoes,” Snell said.

This year’s after prom activities will again be held at Buffalo Wild Wings.

“Prom Promise was organized to provide an alcohol/drug free alternative to the traditional drinking parties that have become a common form of celebration following a prom,” said Erica Nestor, chair of the 2024 BHS Prom Promise steering committee. “Its focus is to increase awareness of alcohol/drug related crashes involving teens and to help reduce the number of fatalities associated with teenage drunk driving, especially during prom season.”

As always, the event will feature food, games, and lots of prizes, from gift cards to electronics to outdoor adventure gear. Area businesses have again stepped up to support this year’s post-prom event by donating prizes.
