Let's Get Fresh: Happy Thanksgiving

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on November 11, 2018 from Let’s Get Fresh

By Heidi Nawrocki

Well, believe it or not, Thanksgiving is just two short weeks away! It feels like just yesterday we were gathered outside, enjoying the warm
weather and local music at the market. And this Sunday, we will gather in the warmth of the Bridgeport Conference Center for our very first winter market. And there will still be music!

THE SIDES
Ok, you've got the turkey, now it's time for the trimmings. Mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, butternut squash puree, braised kale, and stuffing sounds like a pretty good feast to me. You will find potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash, and kale in abundance. Bread will be available and can be frozen for the big day.

Let's take a look at how you can make this Thanksgiving a local Thanksgiving:

THE TURKEY
You can purchase your turkey from Indian Creek Farm and Shipley's Forest Hill Farm. Be sure to ask Jeff and Nadia and Randal and Barbara about these broad breasted birds. If turkey isn't your thing, check out both farms as well as Sweet Wind Farm and Falling 4 Ewe for a chicken.

THE DESSERT
Magpie's  will be there with her infamous pies. But, maybe you are feeling a bit ambitious. Maybe you want to roast a pumpkin and make a pie. Or pick up some apples and bake an apple pie. Those will be available to those ambitious bakers or those who just want to adorn their tables with pumpkins and pick up apples for fresh eating.
THE ATMOSPHERE

Ok, so now you have all the trimmings. But you've got a bunch of folks coming to your house for dinner. And you want to impart some hygge into your dinner party. Why not pick up a candle from Mountain Oak Candle Company to add a little ambiance to the environment. Or perhaps you are striving to go above and beyond and send your guests home with more than leftovers. Stop by In a Jam to pick up some delicious jam for your guests to take home for their morning after toast - they'll still be full from your delicious dinner the day before!

So, see - it is totally possible to have a local Thanksgiving! You're supporting your local farmer and getting some pretty delicious food to share with friends and family. Now that's something to be thankful for.

And the fun of the winter market is *just* starting! Be sure to mark your calendar for December 16 and our Ugly Christmas Sweater Market. Grab your ugliest sweater, check out our holiday gift guide blog post, and come out to shop local for Christmas!
