Local 4-H Club Member Inez Behrens Statewide Poster Contest Winner

By Trina Runner on August 09, 2019

When snow was still on the ground in February, the Bridgeport’s 4-H Club held their annual poster-making party.  The posters are part of a contest sponsored by the West Virginia 4-H, with the following themes: General Promotion, Club and Special Interest Promotion, Camp Promotion, Healthy Living, Citizenship, Agriculture, STEM, and Dairy.

The yearly contest helps increase members’ awareness of the topics and provide an opportunity for artistic expression.  After judges assessed the posters, they decided that one was worthy of becoming the first poster to use as a state-wide theme.  That poster was made my Inez Behrens, who is a seven-year member of Bridgeport Chiefs and has attended both county and state 4-H camps for five years.

Behren’s poster followed the Citizenship theme and, after being selected by the county, was then selected by the state for promoting 4-H across West Virginia.  It will also be featured during the National 4-H Week in October and elements of the poster will be used for decorations at the 4-H exhibit at the West Virginia State Fair in August.

The Bridgeport Chiefs, led by Jennifer Sprouse, Shawn Morgan and Tim Morgan, is an active 4-H club that provides activities that focus on Head, Heart, Hands and Health.  Members learn life skills and are inspired to be positive changemakers in their community.  This year, the group learned more about Bridgeport’s community, with Andrea Kerr and Dustin Vincent set to speak at meetings. Members are volunteering at Shepherd’s Corner this summer as part of their community service efforts.

When Behrens considered the theme of Citizenship for her poster, she chose to use a paint palette to represent the diversity of traits for good citizens including leadership, service, citizenship, responsibility and communication.  The tagline, “Add Color to Your Life with 4-H,” is displayed on an easel beside the palette as a reminder of the multi-level benefits of being involved with the organization.

Always a lover of art, Behrens was thrilled when her poster was selected. Last year's poster contest winner was from Marion County.

Anyone interested in getting involved with 4-H can contact the 4-H Extension Office for area clubs and meeting times.
