The Grapevine: Beginning of Lent

By Rosalyn Queen on February 17, 2015 from The Grapevine

This week marks the beginning of Lent with the observance of Ash Wednesday. I hope that most of you have given thought to how you will be observing Lent.  My usual practices are to go to church every morning, to not eat meat on any Wednesday or Friday and to be a little  kinder  and more patient to everyone.  I hope you have given some thought as to what you might do. Of course you can still do the old standards of giving up candy, cigarettes, or coffee.  To some of you this would be a great sacrifice.  The important thing is to to do something that will make you a better person and make you realize that we must all sacrifice to be better people.

Many of you ask me about anise seed and it is really expensive and hard to get from Italy.  I received my Seeds from Italy catalog and it contained seeds to grow anise.  I have never tried but it might be worth it. If you do not get one call 785 748 0609 to order a catalog. You can also go to www.growitalian.com to subscribe to their newsletter.  There are so many interesting and different seeds in the catalog and I hope to try a few new ones.

I finished the book The White Princess and passed it on to my sister.  Now I want to do some research to find out how the story ended.

Carnevale is the major event throughout Italy in February.  It is celebrated the week before Ash Wednesday  with a lot of good food and many parties.  It ends at midnight on Tuesday when everyone becomes solemn to start the observance of Lent leading up to Easter Sunday. Many here  in the states celebrate with the observance of Mardi Gras. On Ash Wednesday everyone  heads to church to receive their ashes, which the priest makes a cross on the head of each individual saying "remember that  thou are dust and unto dust thou shall return."

February is always Black History and Cultural Month and the PWA of Harrison County always sponsors a celebration in observance of this.  A luncheon will be held on February 28 at the PWA with Marjorie Fuller as Keynote Speaker.  For more information or to purchase tickets call 304 624 6881.

The PWA sponsors a food bank at their facility on 305 Washington Avenue.  We work with referrals from different agencies in the area but if you are in need of assistance, please call Elinda Carson, PWA Director at 304 624 6881.  WE have operated the Food Bank for many  years and have given assistance to many needy people.  This year Hogs and Hero's will be sponsoring a spaghetti dinner on February 21 with proceeds in part being donated to the Food Bank. Please support this dinner.

We are also sponsoring a Vera Bradley Purse Bingo On Sunday March 15 at the VFW Hall. Proceeds will help us try to eliminate the possibility of having to sell our building.  Please support us.

Congratulations to the United Way who did meet their goal for this year.  A  great bunch of volunteers.

I hope you are keeping warm, surely Spring is not far off.  Keep in touch with me and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine."
