The Grapevine: Cold Weather and Warm Soup

By Rosalyn Queen on January 14, 2016 from The Grapevine

If we thought we were going to get off without any cold weather, boy were we fooled.  I just want to caution everyone to be careful about catching a cold with this sudden change. I am enjoying this change as I stay inside most of the time and sit in front of the fire that Dave keeps going and look out the patio doors.  If you see me out I have probably been to church or to the grocery store and I do go out and eat occasionally.  Of course, I am still making those trips to the hospital for treatment. A little update:  my hair is coming back in and it is not curly, but it is snow white.  I will miss wearing my pretty hats that all of you have so graciously got for me, but I intend to keep on wearing them until summer.  What a wonderful collection I have!

One of the best things this weather is good for is for making and enjoying soup.  One of my very favorites is vegetable soup and if you are like me you just cannot make two servings, so you make enough to last through several meals.  I had some last week and shared it with my neighbor and anyone else who came by.  I love eating it with grilled cheese sandwiches or with an egg salad sandwich. I am still addicted to chicken soup and will put a pot of it on every other week. I like it with hard Italian bread and an Italian salad.

Last week I ate at Oliverio's Restaurant and had a cup of their French onion soup and it reminded me of just how much I like it. It really is very simple to make and is great served with a hoagie. If you like cream soup there is nothing better than potato soup or the broccoli soup that my cousin Ruby Oldaker makes.  Both of these are a meal if served with a salad. Someone said that soup is good for the soul and I agree.

Are you making spaghetti tonight for guests?  Here is a unique centerpiece that will brighten up your table.  Take about two pounds of uncooked spaghetti. Place a rubber band around it in the middle and then fan the spaghetti out.    Place a pretty ribbon around the middle and place it in the tomato sauce can you used to make the sauce. You might also add a spaghetti server to the centerpiece. When dinner is done put the spaghetti back in a plastic bag and it is ready to use. If you have a special recipe for your sauce, present the centerpiece to your guest with the recipe and it makes a great gift.

A reminder that our next holiday will be Valentine's Day.  Plan a special treat for all those that you love.  You might also send cards to all the kids. They love to get mail and will be so excited to open them.

A happy birthday to all of you January babies especially to my sister Joan and my brother Bill.

Stay warm, stay well and until next week "Now You Have Heard It through the Grapevine."
